Donnie Vondra - “If I Didn’t Love You”

It is good to see Donnie get a Nashville review.

via The 9513 by Karlie Justus on 11/19/08

Donnie Vondra Songwriters: Daryl Neil Burgess and Robert W. Terry, Jr.

Some of today's pop-country fare tries very hard to convince listeners of its legitimate country chops: Taking cues from David Allen Coe, some incorporate popular themes like mama, trucks and trains, while others overlay the genre's most recognizable instruments when the material otherwise doesn't warrant it. And then, there are some songs that don't have to try at all.

"If I Didn't Love You" falls into the latter category, and while it's neither groundbreaking nor life-changing, it is a breath of fresh country music air. The song combines a golden trifecta of country music—steel guitar, fiddle and a strong, twangy vocal—to pull together a sweet, toe-tapping ditty reminiscent of Marty Raybon-era Shenandoah.

With lyrics like "I might have been all alone/On a lonely road/With no one to come home to," the single tackles the tired theme of what life might have been like without that special someone, like a country version of the Choose Your Own Adventure children's books.

"If I Didn't Love You" shares the lyrical shortfalls of so many similarly themed songs, and it's especially disappointing to hear a tired romantic cliché like "moonlight rays on your skin" in an otherwise straightforward song. However, the mediocre lyrics are saved by the Grapeland, Texas, native's strong voice and charm, with additional help from the catchy musical arrangement.

Vondra's first national release with indie label Loftin Creek, "How Long Am I Supposed to Wait," failed to make waves on national charts, and his latest single's instrument-heavy arrangement could be better suited for dance hall performances than radio airwaves. It also comes dangerously close to existing in a time warp of the nineties country neo-traditional formula, without bringing anything distinctly new or modern to the table.

To ears conditioned to overproduced, guitar and drum-heavy spectacles as seen on last week's 2008 CMA Awards, "If I Didn't Love You" could come off as simple and plain—which is exactly what is so nice about it.

Thumbs Up

This Austin band has become a national act that is very unique and very successful. Jesse Smith

Austin's Ghostland Observatory closed out their two night (sold-out) stand Saturday night at Stubb's under the glow of more laser beams than a Pink Floyd light show. Touring behind time tested material off their two previous albums, the weekend's shows were also a chance for the band to showcase songs off their synth-drenched latest effort, Robotique Majestique.

My Austin Weekend

Last weekend was a great experience.
I got to spend time with Dakota, Allison, Ben, Katie, Jesse(not me), Len Brown, Dennis Fallon of TwoTons and the whole band plus see Ghost Land Observatory perform. We started at 9:30am at the radio station www.koop.org. Meeting Len was a trip. This guy has a music knowledge that is remarkable. We (Dakota,Dennis and I)did our one hour radio show recording both audio and video. We then met Ben,Katie, and Jesse for lunch. After a brief return to Dakota's house,we then went to see GLO perform their laser show as VIP guest (wow). Then we headed out to the legendary Broken Spoke to see TwoTons perform. This place is a trip. The owner James White is a legend in Texas as one of the best poker players ever and he is also an excellent host. Spending time with my son was great. We arrived in Tomball late Saturday night. Sunday Dakota worked on my computer then drove back to Austin and I crashed. What a trip.

These are just some of the pictures. I will add more in the next few days.

Instrument and Amp Cover

Recently, (yesterday) I saw a picture of an Amp cover My friend and great Steel Guitar Player, Cal Sharp) had and was very impressed with the quality and design. After asking him where he got it I found out his wife Leann makes them and has a group of famous customers. I am adding this link to my link list and can recommend Cal and Leann as people that you can do business with and never worry. Cal is a lifetime member of the Historical Lonestar Cowboy band and was never a no show or never late. He also does websites and graphic design, besides being one of the most talented steel players in the music world.
