From Nashville returning to Houston playing with the River Road Boys at Frank's Ice House, Moved from Houston in 1989 were dad played with serveral local bands in Colorado Springs, CO, It was a friday night while dad was playing The Devil went down to Georgia when Dad fell from the stage and went into a ceisure, It was then they found the brain tumor, Dad went under three operations to remove it  they dicribed it as a spider removing the mass of the body but leaving behind the legs, What took over 20 years to grow the first time took only months to grow back  in which grew even faster the third time.  Daddy pasted away in October 1991. Listening to his music as he pasted in peace, My mother was always by his side day and night never leaving, I was there that morning as he took his last breath. I remember telling Mother it was over now he can rest.

Forgotten Artist: Jimmy Heap - Release Me

James Arthur Heap was born on March 3, 1922, in Taylor, TX and died on December 4, 1977. Western swing bandleader Jimmy Heap led the Melody Masters for over three decades. He worked on KTAE in Taylor, Texas from 1948 1958 and on the Big D Jamboree, KRLD, Dallas, Texas. He formed the Melody Masters just after his service in World War II, with sidemen Arlie Carter, Louie Rincon, Bill Glendining, and Horace Barnett.

A continuing spot on local radio gave the Melody Masters a bit of renown around central Texas, and Imperial Records signed the band in 1949. Some time before the initial recordings, Heap who played lead guitar, hired Houston "Perk" Williams to provide vocals along with his fiddling duties. Though Williams had never sung before, his good performance on their debut release, "Today, Tonight, and Tomorrow," guaranteed him the spot ever after another song, "Haunted Hungry Heart," was covered by Slim Whitman. However, it was "The Wild Side of Life" that provided Jimmy Heap & the Melody Masters with their big break. Hank Thompson & the Brazos Valley Boys took it to number one in March 1952, and the single spent 15 weeks there.

But even before Thompson had borrowed the biggest hit of his career, the country star had advised Capitol Records to sign Heap. Over five years the Melody Masters recorded 32 sides for Capitol, including their big hit "Release Me," which reached the No. 5 position on Billboard in 1954. The song was written by Edie Miller, Dub Williams and Robert Yount in 1946. Ray Price charted the song that same year and it peaked at No. 6 on Billboard. Englebert Humperdinck took the song to No 4 on the pop charts in 1967.

"Release Me" was Heaps only Billboard single on the country charts and Heap left Capitol Records in the mid-'50s to form Fame Records. The Melody Masters recorded for Fame throughout the 1950s and '60s and even integrated rock & roll inspirations. Heap disbanded the group in July 1977 and drowned in a boating accident before the year was over.

Saturday night at Dosey Doe's

Hi friends,
As you may have read or heard, legendary singer Ray Price was scheduled to appear this Saturday night, March 24, at Dosey Doe's in Spring, Texas, near The Woodlands, 25011 I-45S, but unfortunately, he had to cancel.
So, The River Road Boys have been invited back, backing up local star Mary Allen-Keating, doing some of her Patsy Cline songs from the "Always...Patsy Cline" stage play, and also featuring Cindy Rohe on keyboards during Mary's set.
Plus, we will have a full set to play some our great western swing for you.
Call Dosey Doe at 281-367-3774 for tickets and reservations.
By the way, Dosey Doe's has some great food on the menu and their own delicious coffee brand you need to try, so make a night of it and come out for some great music and dining.
Hope to see you there.

New Western Swing Website

Hey fans,
You may or may not have heard of Shelly Lee Alley.
He was a true western swing music pioneer and also the father of River Road Boys band member Shelly Lee Alley, Jr. He was also Clyde Brewer's step-father and was very instrumental in developing both of their musical careers.
Chad Alley, Shelly, Jr.'s son, has created a very interesting and historical website that includes a biography about Shelly Lee Alley, Sr., his friendship with the famous "Singing Brakeman" Jimmie Rodgers, some great music videos, and other incredible memorabilia about his history-making grandfather. Just click on this link www.ShellyLeeAlley.com and open some of the website pages to read and learn how western swing music began, and how our band has its roots tracing back to the early 1900's.
Thanks
